What I believe
Here are a few things I believe right now. They're my own views, not rules for anyone else.
Enjoy being alive.
I think it's worth slowing down sometimes just to enjoy being alive. There's so much beauty in our world.
I try to enjoy the present. For me, that can be as simple as basketball, music or being outside.
Be kind to people.
I think kindness is one of the simplest things we can give each other. Honesty and humility matter to me too, and so does helping out when I can.
I also think we can learn so much from one another, if we're willing to listen.
Explore and keep learning.
I love learning about science, the ocean, our planet and what might be out there beyond it.
To me, exploring can be close to home too, like time out in nature or a conversation with someone who sees things differently.
Humanity can accomplish remarkable things together.
I believe humanity is more capable than we often give ourselves credit for. When people cooperate, share knowledge, use resources responsibly and treat one another with kindness, I think we can do extraordinary things.
I don't expect to do any of it alone. I just hope to help, alongside a lot of other people.
Protect the planet, waste less and share more.
To me, protecting the planet comes first. That means cleaning up after ourselves and not wasting things.
I value repairing and reusing things instead of tossing them, and sharing what we have instead of everyone buying their own. I think it's kinder to our planet.
Nobody does this perfectly, me included. I just try to do a little better where I can.
Make life simpler and more accessible.
I think a lot of good things in life are harder to reach than they need to be. I like tools and places that are simple to use and open to anyone, whatever their budget. I try to question complexity that doesn't need to be there.
I hope more people everywhere can have good access to the basics, like housing, food, clean water, healthcare, education, energy and transportation. I also hope they can enjoy recreation, community spaces, science and chances to learn and contribute. Many of the ideas on my Projects page come back to this.
Question systems, including excessive dependence on money.
I question why money has so much control over people's freedom and opportunities. Right now it's a tool, and I don't think it's the purpose of life.
I believe we can gradually build systems where necessities, recreation, knowledge and meaningful experiences are more accessible, ideally free or very affordable whenever that's sustainable. I hope money matters less and less over time, but that's a hope, not a promise. I don't have the answers here. I just think it's worth asking.
Give back and leave places better than we found them.
Whether it's a park, a campus or a neighborhood, I'd like to leave it a little better than I found it.
Giving back can be small. Helping someone out and sharing what you know both count.
You don't have to agree with me on any of this. I'd much rather you think things through for yourself.
If you see something differently, I'd really like to hear it.
